(REPRINTED from the Norwich Bulletin)Saying that God spelled backwards
is "dog" may not be an Original statement, but making that remark a life
philosophy can result in a unique relationship between man and his "best
friend". James York said he has been around canine companions all his life.
So have many other people, but Jamie York's love for his four legged friends
has reached what appears to be new bonds of communication and understanding.
In recent years, York and his family have started a dog training business
that focuses on the "psyche of the animal", a method of training.
The Bad Dog Co. aligns to establish understanding between man and dog
through "total canine awareness". One of the many posters bedecking the
walls of the Bad Dog Co.'s office, is the company's policy. "Bad Dogs Co.'s
philosophy is that each every dog has its own personality as well as psyche
Many methods of training are useful and successful. None are any value
until you build a solid relationship with your companion". Through a system
of reaching the psyche of the animal, a combination of training methods,
and proper nutrition. York has come up a method of training guard dogs,
ferocious enough to bite a man's arm off, yet calm and affectionate enough
to follow the orders of a five year old boy. Jamie York is researching
his training system to come up with the ultimate method of teaching dogs
obedience, protection and tracking. He is also conducting a one-man crusade
to expose and eliminate dog-training methods that are harmful to the dog.
York said that there is no licensing for dog training and that leaves the
field wide open to anyone to start a dog training business. Canines may
have their own personality, but character is largely based on the personality
of the owner, York said. A neurotic master will lead to a neurotic dog.
York and Sons own many dogs, trained as guard dogs. Renting their canines
for protection is how the business was dubbed the "Bad Dog Co." He also
boasts of a 100% satisfaction guarantee. His training method involves using
many successful parts of other systems. Most notables the Shutzhund style
from Germany. All negative conditioning is by voice. York advocates not
giving food as a reward, never striking the dog, and giving commands in
a firm but friendly manner. Decorated with photographs of leaders of Eastern
religious sects and
posters in serene colors it is hard to tell at first that the small
cramped Bad Dog office is the headquarters of a dog training firm. That
is until the leather leashes and T-Shirts with the words "Bad Dog" are
spotted on the wall. A friendly energetic man, who sports frizzy hair and
tinted glasses, York is aware that he talks too fast and abounds in excess
energy. Through meditation, York said he can convey to his dogs. He can't
explain why, but the trainer insists there is a great deal we can learn
from our canine companions. The experience of dealing with the mind of
a dog is like describing red to a blind person, he said. But the exercise
is necessary if the dog is to bond with you. "Remember, your canine friend
will only be able to learn based on your attitude toward him. While training,
let nothing come between you and your dog," another poster says in the
training room. "Dogs know whether their masters are nervous or jumpy, they
do it by vibes, and it will get them nervous too ", the trainer said. Notably,
one of the Bad Dog's clients was Sri Swami Satchidananda, head of Integral
Yoga based in Buckingham, Virginia. Swamji,s pet Ramee (husky and shepherd)
was beautiful and trained well. She was also raised a vegetarian. As part
of his research, York is developing a natural dog food free of artificial
preservatives. Honey, grains and wheat grass are included in the product,
which is not yet available to the public. " A healthy dog is a happy dog.""
Nutrition is the key to an intelligent canine", reads a message on the
training room wall. York also says natural foods will keep the dog more
alert. Herbal medications are used for treating disease. Garlic is used
for worming, the trainer said, and the dog is fasted for two days. During
that period, it is fed only water and honey for energy. ''There's no problem
training the dog", he said," but sometimes there is with the people". Yorks
methods of training are always changing as he researches and observes new
styles of dog training. ''Like people " York remarks, "dogs are always
changing." York said he also began to study Eastern religions in a search
for God which has concerned him all his life. Growing up in New Rochelle,
New York, he attended a seminary and considered becoming a brother in the
Salesian Order. Whether relating meditation and dog training can scientifically
be proven, has not yet been determined, but York does not seem very concerned
about it. What he has found is he can produce well trained canine companions.
Maybe that is what gives this dog trainer peace of mind.............
